Curriculum-Aligned Animal Workshops for PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN WALES

Real animals. Real learning.

Our Wales curriculum workshops bring science and real-world learning to life through hands-on experiences with live animals, fully aligned with the Curriculum for Wales and the four purposes.

Each workshop supports multiple Areas of Learning & Experience (AoLEs), including: Science & Technology (living things, habitats, classification, life processes), Humanities (environment, geography, interdependence), Health & Well-being (confidence building, personal development), and Languages, Literacy & Communication (topic vocabulary, discussion).

We are based in North Wales, but cover the whole of Wales.

CASE STUDY: ysgol y CASTELL

How Scaly Safari Transformed Two Mornings of Learning for Seven Primary Classes

Ysgol Y Castell wanted an engaging, curriculum-rich science experience that would work across multiple year groups, support pupils of all abilities, and maintain the highest standards of animal welfare. They needed a provider who could adapt to different learning needs, manage large groups calmly, and supply materials teachers could use beyond the session.

Over two mornings, the Scaly Safari Crew delivered tailored workshops to seven classes, each one adapted to the age group and confidence level of the pupils.

We provided:

  • Pre-visit resources to prepare pupils and extend vocabulary

  • Post-visit worksheets and activities to support follow-up lessons

  • A clear animal welfare-first structure

  • Sessions split across two days to protect animals from overstimulation

  • A blend of hands-on experiences and close-observation learning based on the suitability of each animal

  • A calm, inclusive, SEN-friendly delivery style designed to make every child feel confident and involved

THE EXPERIENCE IN THE CLASSROOM

Pupils met a range of friendly animals including reptiles, mammals and invertebrates — with each interaction framed around the science curriculum.

Teachers highlighted how:

  • The pitch was perfect for each age and ability group

  • Children who were initially nervous quickly became confident

  • The mix of interaction and observation kept every child engaged

  • Curriculum topics became real, memorable and easy to understand

  • The sessions felt safe, calm and expertly managed

We adapted our approach for each group, ensuring every child — including anxious learners and SEN pupils — could participate fully.

One of the standout successes at Ysgol Y Castell was how teachers expanded the experience into wider learning.

After the sessions, staff:

  • Used our pupil workbooks before and after the visit

  • Created a ‘Scaly Safari’ classroom display area

  • Decorated the space with photos from the session

  • Used the animals as a springboard for science, literacy and topic lessons

  • Reinforced new vocabulary and scientific concepts long after the visit

This extended learning meant the workshop continued to support the curriculum well beyond the hour-long session.

EXTENDING THE LEARNING BEYOND THE WORKSHOP

"We were absolutely thrilled with our recent visit from Scaly Safari, who spent two mornings at our school delivering interactive, engaging, and educational sessions to seven different classes. The experience was carefully planned to ensure both the welfare of the animals and the best possible learning opportunities for the children.

We cannot fault Scaly Safari in any way and would 100% book them again. If you’re looking for a high-quality, well-organised, and child-friendly animal encounter, we highly recommend them!" ~ Lizzie Smith, Ysgol Y Castell, Rhuddlan
