FAQS
-
The Scaly Squad is an exclusive, small-group club (ages 8-12) organised by Scaly Safari Co. It runs over three one-hour sessions. Participants get to meet, handle and learn about a variety of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates in a safe, calm environment. Each child also receives a completion certificate and a plush toy snake to take home.
-
Age range: 8-12 years old.
Suitable for children who are interested in snakes, lizards, “mini beasts” (insects/arthropods) and the natural world.
This is an introductory club, so no prior experience with reptiles is required.
Group size is strictly limited (only up to 12 children) to ensure each child gets hands-on time and personal attention.
-
Each session features:
A one-hour encounter with real animals: snakes (e.g., boas, pythons), lizards, giant insects and other “creepy crawlies”.
Hands-on handling opportunities (under supervision) to hold and touch real creatures.
Instruction and fun facts from professional reptile handlers — learning about the animals, their habitats, behaviour and care.
A take-home certificate and plush snake toy at the end of the three-week programme.
-
Handling is always under the supervision of experienced professionals, ensuring children’s safety and the welfare of the animals.
The club emphasises calm, controlled interactions in a “safe setting”.
If your child has allergies (e.g., to animals, insects, dust) or any health condition, please inform us in advance so we can take appropriate precautions.
Please ensure children are dressed in appropriate clothing (e.g., closed-toed shoes, no loose scarves) and bring any necessary medication (e.g., inhaler) with them.
If your child is feeling unwell on a session day, please keep them at home and notify us; we’ll advise about make-up arrangements if possible.
-
Absolutely. The club is designed for curious kids — whether they already love reptiles or are just beginning to explore them. The small group size and hands-on, guided approach make it welcoming for beginners. The key is enthusiasm and willingness to learn about animals.
-
We totally understand that some animals can be a bit intimidating at first. The instructors are experienced at reading children’s comfort levels and will always allow a child to opt out of handling a particular animal if they’re not ready. The aim is positive, enjoyable engagement — not pressure.
-
Because the club runs as a three-week programme with progressive content, we encourage attendance at all three sessions for the full experience.
Refunds for missed sessions are not possible.
-
Please arrive a few minutes early for check-in.
Dress comfortably, ideally in clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy (some animals might shed or have tiny particles). Closed-toed shoes recommended.
If your child has long hair, tying it back is a good idea during the handling session.
No special equipment is needed — everything (animals, handling gear) is provided by the facilitators.
Optional: a small notebook if your child wants to jot down cool facts.
-
Here at Scaly Safari, we emphasise respect for the animals:
Sessions are designed to be calm and enriching, not stressful for the creatures.
Children are taught correct handling and appropriate behaviour around animals (no chasing, squeezing, or sudden loud noises).
The animals used are ones accustomed to gentle handling and exposure to children.
The aim is both fun and educational: fostering compassion, respect and curiosity toward living creatures.
-
Generally yes — parents or guardians are welcome to stay and observe if space allows.
However, to maintain the calm, focused atmosphere for the children and animals, we ask that parental involvement is minimal during the session itself (please leave the interaction to the facilitators).
If you plan to remain, please ensure you understand any venue guidelines (e.g., quiet zone, no food/drink in handling area).
